The master/model of Dewey was made with Apoxie Sculpt.
To make a mold of all the pieces I used SORTA-Clear 40 from Smooth-On Inc. Usually, this silicone is used for food related projects, but I needed it to be transparent in order to see what I’m doing while preparing the different colored layers of Dewey.
When the mold was done, I mixed small batches of Ecoflex 00-30 to start with the outer layers of the fish. Starting with the red markings, moving to his eyes and yellow parts, and then filling the 2 halves of the mold with grey and blue tinted silicone.
In order to have each layer not flow into the next one and smudge them I waited a couple of minutes before I applied certain layers.
Cure time is important here as it will be easier to work with thin layers when the silicone isn’t that liquid anymore. It’ll make sense when you made a couple of these in order to really understand what I mean. Sorry.
So basically, I mixed the red, waited, and then applied the red markings. Then waited a while longer and used a tool to keep the markings separated if they started to flow into each other. Constantly watching and working on those markings until the silicone didn’t move anymore. The same procedure for the eyes, and the yellow parts. Keep in mind, There’s 2 halves of a mold, so I worked on both sides simultaneously.
For the grey/blue body I mixed silicone and poured it in both halves, and them as fast as I could I slapped them together and used rubber bands to keep them like that. If there’s any silicone missing, I just filled it up at the pour spot near the mouth, of course matching the grey that was already in there.
The fins and antennas where squeezed in their places by cutting the silicone open.
Silicone glue could be applied here, but back then I didn’t have any.
