Lord’s Blade Ciaran’s costume was a well balanced mix of fabric and thermoplastics. It was relaxing to work with the blue fabric and handstitching it was a bit of work, but the overall look of the costume is satisfying.

The patterns were cut on craft foam and then covered with Cosplayflex, a great thermoplastic.

It took a while to find the right design of the border on Ciaran’s helmet. I got the perfect design, but had to dye the greenish parts of it to get the contrast I wanted. I just used regular acrylics as dye.

To attach the front and backplate of the armor I cut 2 pieces of leather and inserted chicago screws. I always make my armor as secure as possible, so it doesn’t fall off during conventions or slips off suddenly.

priming and painting all those small gauntlet parts was easier than it looks. I used a pipe and attached all armor pieces on it so they couldn’t move and painted them later. Also a great way for weathering.

All parts were glued together to an elastic band, which allowed me to move my finger freely.

One of Ciaran’s weapons is the Gold Tracer. I built the base with some leftover foam boards and covered everything with Cosplayflex.
You can buy foam boards at your local DIY store, it isn’t anything special which needs to be bought somewhere else.

I drew the pattern on to a big sheet of paper and cut it out.
Traced the pattern to a foam board and started shaping it with a cutting knife until I was ok with the shape. Then sanded the whole piece to get an even surface.

I later traced the foam piece to a piece of Cosplayflex and covered the entire blade with it on both sides. What’s Cosplayflex?

For this blade decoration I took a piece of craft foam (also available at your local DIY store) and cut the pattern. Because craft foam is flexible, I edged a few lines in so I could fold those parts much better.

Ciaran’s other weapon is the Dark Silver Tracer. The same materials were used as in the other weapon build, only here I additionally used Cosplayflex Clear, which is a flexible and translucent thermoplastic.
With this I could create convention friendly spikes for the dagger.

I roughly cut the dagger and cut it into 2 pieces, because inside of the blade I decided to put an EL wire which will illuminate the spikes.

Cut the canal for the EL wire here and already cut all the holes for the spikes. I then made sure if the entire EL wire could fit into the canal.

The batteries for the EL wire where hidden in the handle part of Ciaran’s weapon. To make sure the thermoplastic Cosplayflex doesn’t get stuck to itself, I put a piece of parchmet paper between both parts, so I could build the lid for the batterie pack.

I painted the weapon with automotive spray paint and weathered everyting with black acrylics to let it appear a bit antique. And the dagger was ready!

      Hi there!
I just wanted to let you know that this costume looks fantastic!
I am preparing for ComicCon 2016 where I will be going as Ciaran, and lately I have been doing my research on this topic.
I think your high attention to detail makes your cosplay really stand out among the rest. Great job!

I was wondering about the Cosplayflex Clear you used for the spikes on the blade – it being flexible (con-safe) and clear sounds exactly like the kind of material I could use but I find very little information or examples of it used. How soft is it / how well does it keep its form, if you bend/manipulate it when cold will it snap back into it’s original form or can you warp it if you are not handling it carefully?
